Almost everything you think about workplace stress is wrong

Working with leading scientists at UCL, King’s College and Bath University, BioStress carried out a world-first study of workplace stress and its relationship to productivity and performance. Using advanced biometric devices we objectively measured stress and delivered our unique BIO programme in two call centres in this global healthcare provider.

High perceived stress, but…

  • Biometric data revealed the opposite – low levels of actual physiological stress
  • For many, work was not their biggest cause of stress
  • The more stress people experienced, the lower they rated the company
  • We identified specific sleep problems and a serious lack of physical movement – both at work and at home
  • Overall stress management and wellbeing were poor

  • Each individual received personalised recommendations to improve their stress management.
  • For many, this was about reframing stress to recognise the mismatch between perception and reality.
  • Improving sleep, movement, exercise and relaxation.

By anonymising and aggregating data we were able to make recommendations to Bupa for changes to training, working practices and stress management.
